<hi style=afpcap>Another design which began in response to a Navy requirement, the Sikorski H-3 was ordered by the Air Force following a brief period of loan of three Navy examples. The Air Force needed a helicopter to perform resupply duties as well as that of Search and Rescue, with the type being ordered as the CH-3 for the former and the HH-3 for the latter. The HH-3 was extensively used in Vietnam to Rescue downed airmen, with the unofficial title 'Jolly Green Giant' being applied. A change of powerplant resulted in a revised designation, while other were modified for new roles also seeing a new designation being applied. Following sterling service in Vietnam, the CH/HH-3s were retained in active duty service, before some were supplied to the reserves. These remained operational until 1994 when the final examples were retired from service.</hi>
